Colonel Charles F. Taylor, the 23-year-old commander of the Bucktails (13th Pennsylvania Reserves), fell to a Confederate bullet in the breast as he was preparing to order up more men for an assault on the rebels at Devil’s Den.  “Probably no officer of the Bucktails was ever better or more generally loved than Colonel Taylor,” read a history of the regiment.  Although Colonel Taylor was only 23 years old when he was killed at Gettysburg, he had already been wounded at Fredericksburg.  A native of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, he had attended the University of Michigan at the age of 15 but had returned home to run his ailing father’s farm before the war broke out.  He was named Colonel of the Bucktails when he was 21 years old.
 
The monument is located on Ayers Avenue and was dedicated by Taylor’s men in November of 1905.
