The 5th Connecticut fought at Gettysburg under the command of Colonel Warren W. Packer. “It was our good fortune that, though sent to almost every part of the line as emergency required, the regiment was not seriously engaged, and our losses were light,” said Lieutenant Colonel John B. Lewis, the regimental surgeon, during the dedication ceremony in 1887.
The monument is located on Slocum Avenue and was dedicated on August 9, 1887.
