The 142nd Pennsylvania arrived on the field with the 1st Corps on July 1, 1863 and was eventually outflanked by the advancing Confederate troops and forced to fall back to Seminary Ridge and then to Cemetery Hill. Its colonel, Robert P. Cummins, was mortally wounded here on July 1 and died the next day. Lieutenant Colonel Alfred B. McCalmont took command when Cummins fell.
The monument is located on Reynolds Avenue and was dedicated in 1889.
